What is an ultrasound?

An ultrasound is an advanced diagnostic tool that uses sound waves to generate images of your internal organs. Dr. Paciuc may recommend an ultrasound to rule out or confirm a diagnosis or to evaluate your baby during pregnancy.

What are the types of ultrasounds?

For women, there are two common types of ultrasounds. The type you need may depend on the reason for your diagnostic imaging. The two tests include:

Transabdominal ultrasound

During a transabdominal ultrasound, the ultrasound wand is placed over your abdominal area. A special gel is applied to your abdomen before you begin the test to improve imaging and the movement of the wand.

Transvaginal ultrasound

During a transvaginal ultrasound, the ultrasound wand is placed in your vaginal canal. The wand is covered in the special gel and then a latex sheath is placed over the wand before insertion.

Dr. Paciuc determines the type of ultrasound you need and reviews what to expect before you begin.

Why would I need a gynecological ultrasound?

Dr. Paciuc may recommend a gynecological ultrasound to evaluate your reproductive organs and/or confirm or rule out a health concern. Some of the most common reasons he may recommend an ultrasound include:

  • Assess the size and shape of your reproductive organs
  • Look for fibroids or ovarian cysts
  • Diagnose an infection
  • Look for the presence and placement of an intrauterine device
  • Diagnose an ectopic pregnancy

Ultrasounds are also used as a visual guide for various procedures.

How often can I expect ultrasounds during pregnancy?

Ultrasounds are one of the most exciting tests for expectant women. The frequency of your ultrasounds may depend on your stage of pregnancy and whether there are any concerns about you or your baby’s health that would require more frequent ultrasounds.

In general, your first ultrasound may be at your first obstetric appointment. This ultrasound is used to confirm pregnancy and estimate the due date.

You can expect your second ultrasound around 16-20 weeks. During this ultrasound, Dr. Paciuc and his maternal-fetal medicine specialists evaluate your uterus and placement of your placenta, as well as the structures and organs of your baby.

Additional ultrasounds may be needed for more specialized tests during your pregnancy, such as the nuchal translucency screening for Down syndrome and the non-stress test that measures your baby’s heartbeat.

An ultrasound is a noninvasive test used for many purposes. To learn more about the gynecological services at John Paciuc, MD, call the office to schedule an appointment.
